I have taken numerous online courses/classes, but the best by far for card making are the “Online Card Classes” hosted by Jennifer McGuire and Kristina Werner. If you missed a class, you can still take them. Check out their website for more information. P.S. I highly recommend Tim Holtz’s Creative Chemistry 101 and 102, and Clean & Simple 1 & 2.

The recent class, Stenciled, deals with using stencils. I really had no idea there were so many ways to use them. I tried three different techniques – my first time using stencils (and I have lots to learn) and for a first effort they are not too bad.

For my first card, I went for a more masculine look. I used a MFT Gears stencil and  sprayed it with Walnut Stain by Tuskineko on Neenah Desert Storm. While that dried, I die cut the gears using Tim Holtz Sizzix Die GADGET GEARS Bigz Alterations. I used various tones of brown card stock and inked them with Tim’s Distress Inks. The tag die is MFT’s Die-namics Dog Tag and I used a sentiment from Hero Art’s WHAT A GUY cl753 2014 OWH.

My second card used a pencil technique and scribbled heart designs using dry Derwent Inktense over the background using a homemade heart stencil. The stamp set is from MFT - Pure Innocence Love Is in the Air. I coloured her with copics and paper pieced her dress. The scalloped edge is from MFT – Blueprint 4. The banner die is by Simon Says Stamp -SMALL FOLDED BANNERS Pair of Dies S137. I like how the card has the look of a children’s card.

My final attempt took a little time. I used a stencil called Star Pattern by Mr. Huey. I first tried to create the star background using Tim Holtz’s Distress Paint – White Picket Fence, but I had issues with the paint going under the stencil. Next I tried using  Tim Holtz’s Metallic Mixative GOLD and Silver Alcohol Inks. Once I had my starry background, I stamped my space scene using Paper Smooches – SPACE CADET and the Earth from Hero Arts Clear Stamps EPIC LOVE CL645 Operation Write Home on to Neenah Solar White card stock. I coloured the images with Copics, and the Moon and Earth were done with distress inks.

I have ordered some more stencils and the thicker Wendy Vecchi Studio 490 White Embossing Paste for more textured backgrounds so I can try some of the other techniques discussed in the class. If you are interested in learning the how to’s check the Online Card Classes, they are fun and educational, and very reasonably priced.
