Prima Doll Mixed Media Canvas

This past summer I was lucky enough to take a cruise with Julie Nutting. During the “sea days” we attended two workshops hosted by Julie. She showed us how she creates her doll canvases. Today I made one using the Prima Doll Mermaid.

mermaid canvasI started with prepping the canvas with white Gesso, then sponging various green and blue acrylic paints. Once dry, I used stencils to create some plants and dimension. Next I stamped the mermaid on cardstock, cut her out, and Modge Podged the full canvas and doll. I allowed the MP to set, then using glossy accents, glues each sequins on her bra top and body. I free styled painting on her hair vs use the stamped hairstyle. T embellish the canvas, I added some shells die cuts by Impression Obsession, pearls and gem flourishes, an old brooch, paper flowers, glass domes, button, lobster, and broken shell gravel.

I entered my canvas into Anything Goes with a Twist – Challenge 6 - decorate a canvas and My Craft Spot -Use Sequins

UPDATE: My canvas won Top 5 at the Anything Goes with a Twist – Challenge 6 - decorate a canvas.

Kindred Souls Art Cruise with Julie Nutting “Prima Dolls”

I am gearing up for my crafting cruise to Alaska. We had two optional projects, one was to design 15 swag tags using Prima Dolls, and the other was to make a mixed media art piece for a draw swag. Well one of the reasons I am taking the cruise, beside the fact I love the Prima Dolls, is to learn multi-media techniques. I have never make a 3d m-m anything. I was going to make a picture frame, but I found a wooden box at our local Homesense on special and decided to tackle a jewelry or treasure box. One of Julie’s recent releases had a wooden die cut mermaid and a new mermaid stamp so that was my inspiration.

I started using modge podge, but it really bubbled the paper…I ended up going with the flow,so to speak, because it resembled waves. I used stamps by Designs by Ryn, Prima- stamps/die cuts/paper/embellishment, MFT rose dies, real shells, jewels, pearls, netting, sequins, paint, copic markers, and about 10 coats for clear lacquer. Here is the result.
